GREY afternoon with regular heavy showers and gusty winds made Looe Bay look more like winter than mid-summer.

The sailing fleet offered the only glimpes of colour to the day.

Racing was fast and furious from the start, with the main action occurring at the gybe mark, which was positioned in the Island channel.

The conditions caught out several members of each fleet.

Peter Kinver led the Redwing fleet away, only to be caught out by a gust at the gybe mark, allowing birthday boy Colin Crabb to avoid the carnage and take a lead he was not going to surrender.
