Looe Town 1

Downderry Rovers 2

Downderry Veterans took on an unknown Looe side on Sunday in a charity event for the Cornwall Air Ambulance.

The match, at Looe Academy Sports Field, raised more than £200.

The game started with Downderry very dominant and, against the run of play, Looe took the lead with a well-taken lob over the Downderry keeper.

This seemed to kick start Rovers into action and, after a few tactical substitutions, Downderry pulled a goal back through Malcolm Chapman.

It was a short pass from John Niblett just inside the penalty area to Chappers who controlled the ball perfectly to catch it on the half volley for a low hard drive into the far corner of the net, leaving the outstretched, young agile keeper no chance. Although the game was very even the Looe keeper was in more action than Mike Roberts in the Downderry goal as the visitors pushed for a winner, which did eventually come through Steve Rendle. Nick Trevarthan played a ferocious pass into Rendle which was controlled with expert skill and talent.

Rendle then played a one-two with Kessell, and, as he got the ball back from Kessell, he blew the Looe defence away with his blistering pace and headed towards goal. With great vision and awareness he noticed the on-rushing keeper and deftly chipped past him.

Looe pushed for an equaliser but Downderry held on for the win which they deserved.

The match was refereed for free in the name of charity by Martin McHugh.
