IN weather more suited to rugby or football, Callington unveiled their new players in this first fixture of the new campaign, playing host to neighbours Werrington in the Premier Cup competition that the hosts had won last season.

New captain Matt Robins won the toss and elected to bowl first in damp, blustery conditions.

Werrington struggled against the opening seam attack of Chris Davies and Aiden Libby, who both bowled economically, and it was Libby that struck in the 12th over when Adam Hodgson lofted one to Jim Shorten at mid-off.

The hosts had to wait for another 11 overs for their next wicket – but two came in the 23rd over courtesy of another new signing, Cornwall left-arm spinner Andrew Libby.

Both Nick Ward and Warren Rumble were bowled by Libby but, just as Callington hoped to put the visitors to the sword, the Smeeth brothers combined to add 112 for the fourth wicket, with left-hander Alex making 83 and skipper Ben, 50.

Alex hit nine fours and four sixes as it gradually dawned on the home side that they were going to be chasing a large total.
