Cornwall Senior Cup Quarter Final

Wendron Utd 2

Callington Town 2 aet

(Callington won 5-4 on pens)

THE Marshmen earned themselves a semi-final draw against fellow Peninsula Premier side Godolphin Atlantic after coming through this tie against Cornwall Combination side Wendron by the skin of their teeth.

'I'm absolutely delighted to see the boys eventually make it over the line to claim the club's first semi-final appearance in the Cornwall Senior Cup,' said Town player-manager Lee Beer.

'Cup games are all about enjoying the victory which is lucky because, if it was based on performance, then we certainly didn't do ourselves justice.

'I can only praise Wendron highly for, from a neutral's point of view, making it a fantastic cup game,' he added.

There were just two minutes left on the clock when Gary Williams' free kick found the back of the Wendron net to rescue his side and send the tie into extra time.

Town had earlier taken the lead, on 21 minutes, courtesy of Kirk Smith's fine left foot strike from the edge of the area but Wendron hit back with Justin Miles hammering them level five minutes later.

Town then owed a vote of thanks to goalkeeper Sam Borthwick who saved Miles' penalty after Luke Wort had been brought down in the area.

Wendron looked to have won the tie when they restored their lead, eight minutes from time, when Justin Searled lashed the ball home from close range but Williams' effort sent the tie into a goal-less extra period.

That meant that a dreaded penalty shoot-out would be needed to settle the game. The first eight were all clinically despatched before Wort saw his effort come back off the post to leave Luke Avis-Riordan to send his side through to the last four.
