The final round of group games in the English Short Mat Bowling Association (ESMBA) Inter County Championship were played on Sunday, with Cornwall travelling to ISCA Indoor Bowling Club in Exeter to face Devon, while Dorset hosted Somerset.

The final score was Cornwall 29 points 211 shots, Devon 11 points 163 shots.

Cornwall go forward to the main knockout competition later in the season.

The preliminary round is scheduled for the weekend of February 9-10 which clashes with the Short Mat Players Tour English Masters.

The quarter-finals follow a fortnight later over the weekend of February 23-24, semi-finals on the following weekend, March 2-3, and finals on March 17.

Cornwall’s Premier Team started in the best possible way, taking all eight points from the first session. In the Singles, Nigel Nicholls won 17-9 and James Smith 17-12.

In the Pairs, Elise Daniell and David Studden won 13-9 and John Worton and Peter Hore 12-10.

Cornwall took a further five points from the second session.

In the Triples, Graham Reeves, Mike Dyer and Percy Tripp won 13-12 and Betty Temple Smith, Max Burden & Keith Matthews drew 15-15.

In the Fours, Nathan Waters, Nicholas Truscott, Martin Boraston and Luke Jolly won 20-5.

At the halfway point in the match Cornwall led by 13 points to 3 and 113 shots to 90.

With 19 points being the target for Cornwall to guarantee qualification for the knockout stages of the championships, Cornwall surpassed the target with a session to spare, taking 10 out of 12 points in the third session.

In the Pairs, Daniell and Studden won 23-0 and in the Singles Nicholls won 19-8 & Smith 14-13.

Cornwall took the bonus points in in both the Singles and Pairs to lead 23-5.

In the final session, Cornwall won two games, Matthews’ Triple 10-8 and Jolly’s Four 11-7.  Cornwall took the Triples bonus points but missed out on the Fours by 1.

The final score was Cornwall 29 points 211 shots Devon 11 points 163 shots.

In the day’s other match in Cornwall’s group Dorset won 26-14 against Somerset.

In the final standings, Dorset top the table with 152 points, Cornwall are second on 125, Devon third on 104 and Somerset fourth on 99.

The A Team shared the first session, winning both Singles, Mark Payne 18-13 and Ronnie Thomas 14-10.  Three wins in the second session moved Cornwall into the lead.

In the Triples Lyn Smith, Mike Webster & Keith Williams won 12-10 and Dennis Shorthouse, Bob Smith & Brenda Smith 16-6.

In the Fours Rose Dyer, Beryl Langsworthy, Lynne Davey & Gary Davey won 14-4.  At the halfway point Cornwall led 10 points to 6.

In the third session, Cornwall again won both Singles, Payne 15-11 and Thomas 22-3 taking the bonus points but losses in both Pairs saw Cornwall take six of the 12 points on offer from the session.

The final session saw a solitary win for Cornwall with Sleep’s Triple winning 17-13 with no bonus points scored by Cornwall it was Devon who took the match victory by 22 points to 18 and 191 shots to 193.

The day’s other match saw Somerset confirm top spot with a 21-19 win over Dorset to finish with a total of 134 points.

Cornwall take second with 127, Dorset third on 125 and Devon fourth on 94.

The A Team knockout dates are the same as for the Premier Team except that the quarter-finals are one week earlier on February, 16-17.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIERS

On Saturday the National Pairs and Triples qualifiers were played at at Carnmoggas.

This weekend a small group of local bowlers travel to Chelmsford to compete in the Short Mat Players Tour World Fours and Pairs Masters competitions.
