THE first annual Torpoint and Rame Community Action Through Sport (CATS) awards evening took place in a packed council hall.

The charity recognises and rewards young people for their voluntary work.

Guests at the event included MP Sheryll Murray, Jamie Burchill, of the Plymouth Raiders Basketball Team, and Sergeant Chris Chilcott, of Devon and Cornwall Police. The evening was compered by radio and TV presenter Alison Johns.

The awards were for School CATS, where young people give their time voluntarily to assist other pupils by fundraising, sports coaching and taking part in projects in the community.

Three individuals stood out – Roxy Fellows (16) received an award for fundraising. She was also named young woman of the year.

Michael Swailes (17) was named young man of the year for his work with Torpoint and Rame Youth Centre. He leads catering at the centre, not only budgeting, but also preparing excellent meals.

Harry Nicholls (10) of Antony School was recognised for giving his time to establish a table tennis club and promote competitions.
