MORE than 500 young people will be involved in a mass celebration of sport at the Caradon Youth Games competition at Callington Sports College on Thursday, April 17. All secondary schools in the district will be involved in the competition, starting at 1.30pm. This is the fourth year that the games have run and this year sees the introduction of a change in ethos – the aim is to target the semi-sporty students interested in a range of non-traditional sports. Organisers have introduced street surfing, extreme golf, futsal, spinning and pump it up (dance-based activity). Competitions will also take place in rounders, volleyball, gymnastics and table tennis. With the Government's injection of another £100m to the five hours of sport per week programme, the aim of this event is to engage children in unusual sports. The focus is to celebrate local youth sport, citizenship and leadership, with fair play nominations for each activity. The winning school will win an award. For details, telephone Rob on 07813198692.
