TWO young friends have ridden 12 miles along the Camel Trail to raise funds for the World Wildlife Foundation.

George Trengrove, aged six, only learnt to ride his bike without stabilisers during the last lockdown, said his mum, Rachel Higgins.

And while his best friend Elsa Lee, seven, is a more experienced rider, the Camel Trail was still going to be a big challenge for the pair.

The children, who go to Pelynt Primary Academy, are very keen animal lovers, says Rachel: both come from farming families and Rachel is also a veterinary nurse.

“George and Elsa came home from school one weekend and said that they wanted to raise money to protect and adopt endangered animals. We asked them how they were going to raise the money and they came up with the idea of a 10-mile bike ride on the Camel Trail,” explained Rachel.

While Elsa had her heart set on adopting a snow leopard, George wanted to adopt a sea turtle.

During the half-term holiday, the two youngsters and Rachel, together with Elsa’s mum Kylie, set off on the challenge, which turned into a 12-mile ride after a wrong turn at the start of the route!

And while the mums had sore legs by the end, George and Elsa “weren’t even tired” said Rachel.

Having set out to get £100 in sponsorship to cover adopting an animal each through the WWF, George and Elsa have so far raised £590 for the charity.

Their fundraising page can be found by visiting www.justgiving.com and searching for George and Elsa’s 10 Mile Bike Ride.

The WWF’s adopt an animal programme uses funds to monitor endangered species and protect their habitats. In return, children receive a fact pack about their chosen animal, a cuddly toy and regular updates through the year.
