TWENTY-eight young people from Europe are currently volunteering with various projects in and around Kingsand and Cawsand. As part of Point Europa, a training and education charity founded in February 2004, the volunteers are based in the twin villages of Kingsand and Cawsand on the Rame Peninsula. The youngsters, aged from 17-25, have come from troubled or challenging backgrounds, some with health or social problems. They carry out voluntary work, clearing paths at Maker Camp for an outdoor adventure area, as well as painting the old barracks. They are also improving their English and taking part in local activities. Project coordinator Leo Kaserer, from Austria, said: 'The project is funded throughout Europe and we have had some good results. 'One volunteer was a school dropout, but after taking part in this project, she returned home and finished her studies. 'It provides sustainable support for the personal development of young people mainly from a socially deprived background.'
