Prince Rock entertain Saltash Youth on Saturday in DJM U-14 Grenville bringing back memories of last seasons close encounters. From the be-ginning Saltash Youth went on the offensive, giving Prince Rock no time to settle and whether through nervousness or snatching squandered five or six good scoring chances in the first 20 minutes.
Prince Rock were not playing badly, they just were't given the chance to play and when they did get near to the Saltash goal the ball was dealt with quickly, although sometimes without great effect. The only problem Saltash had in defence was when they tried to rush it a little which led to mistakes.
In the 22nd minute the deadlock was broken. From a throw-in on the left the ball found it's way to Lee Crook who in turn pulled the ball back to Luke Kelly who found the bottom right corner of the net. The rest of the half saw chances go begging with both sides competing well but the score at half-time remained 1-0 to Saltash.
The second half was only three minutes old when the score was doubled. Saltash forced a corner when a shot from Tom Chambers was well saved by the goalkeeper. The resulting comer was flicked on at the near post, the ball flashed across the goal and with the defence trying to desperately to clear the ball put it into their own net.
Then Prince Rock started to get back into the game. They started to play the ball around and gave the Saltash team some anxious moments. Prince Rock earned themselves three freekicks in quick succession. All were in front of goal and about 25 yards out. The first hit the post, he second was well saved by the goalkeeper for a corner, and from the resulting comer the ball bobbled in the box and the shot from Prince Rock hit the bar. Then Saltash attacked but the move came to nothing. From the goal kick the ball was won in midfield by Saltash the ball was played through to Lee Crook who lobbed the keeper to make it 3-0.This at the time came against the run of play.
Then Prince Rock got their third free kick. This time they made no mistake. Prince Rock kept up the pressure on Saltash but they managed to deal with the problems. From a throw on the left, the ball was played through to Crook whose shot beat the keeper, but in trying to clear the ball Prince Rock only managed to play it into the net.
Once again the home side attacked, never giving up and this resulted in a second goal. A shot was saved brilliantly by the keeper who could only push it into the path of an oncoming forward who scored. The Saltash keeper was to make another fine save before the end of a fine 4-2 win.
Pensilva Youth entertained AFC Southway in the DJM Warspite and recorded a solid 5-1 win. The match started well with Pensilva putting pressure on Southway. After 10 minutes from a cross from Robin Williams, Kane Wilson volleyed home. Soon after a goalmouth scramble following a cross from Peter Hoare resulted in Wilson notching a second.
Now more relaxed, Pensilva lost concentration and this allowed the visitors to score. This rattled Pensilva back into action and a one two between Wilson and Jack Bartlett resulted in Bartlett netting his first of the match.
Having contained early Southway second half pressure Kane Wilson scored from a corner to complete his hat-trick. The opposing team's man of the match Jack Bartlett scored his second and the last goal resulting in a final score of 5-1 to the home side. The manager's man of the match went to Richard Day for his solid work at the back. It was however a good all round performance.
Horrabridge must think that the Indian sign is on them after the third game in a year in which Ashes have come away with the points after very close matches. They won this DJM U-11 Ajax.
In a game dommated by defences, Ashes started brightly with a good interchange of passing between Dan Smith and Alex West. This set Andrew Deacon free on the right wing, who showing good pace, only saw his shot slide the wrong side of the post. This was Ashes best chance of the first half and the game settled down to a midfield battle with neither side gaining dominance. Horrabridge had their best chance of the game when, after a good block tackle from Ashlev O'Kourke on the edge of the area, the ball spilled out to the Horrabridge left-winger. The player hit an excellent shot to the near post, only to see 'keeper Steven Oak pull off a superb save.
In the second half Ashes pushed Mathew Sleep further forward in an effort to make a break-through but Horrabridge held firm under the added pressure.
This set the tone for the next 20 minutes. Trying to change the pattern of the game, Saltash sent on John-Luke Dodson, who made an immediate impact, forcing panic in the away teams goalmouth and pulling a good save from the keeper. Then, in the 25th minute, Dodson sent West away to force a corner. Smith passed the ball short to Deacon who, after beating his marker, hit the ball into the far corner. This roused Horrabridge to a final last fling as they set siege to the home team's goal, and it took a brilliant last ditch tackle by Matt Fox to keep a clean sheet. Ashes had a final last chance when, after good work on the right, Paul Rutherford saw a great shot knocked away, just eluding the onrushing Daniel Pain. As Man of the match was Steven Oak as Saltash secured three hard earned points.
St Cleer Under 14's Grenville entertained a very good Weston Mill Oak Villa side and, without the influential James Brown, they failed to cope with their opponent's quick runs and well-organised teams.
Weston took the lead against the run of play only for Craig Hamson to equalise and then put St Cleer in front with his 10th goal of the season. Weston soon equalised and then went 3-2 up before half-time.
Straight from the restart, Martyn Hake equalised with a fine effort from wide on the right. St Cleer's lack of ability to clear the ball was again telling and Weston scored two more goals to make the final score 5-3. Tim Young had a good opportunity to reduce the arrears but failed to do so. Weston's goal scorers were Allen (three), Humphries and Worth.
St Cleer's manager's man of the match went to Steven Tapper. Weston's was awarded to Craig Hamson. This week, St Cleer face another difficult task when they travel to Saltash Utd.
