THE fight to extend the taxi rank in the centre of Liskeard took on a new twist yesterday (Thursday) when workmen moved in to extend the rank – but only by one metre.
This happened just a day after it had been confirmed by county and district cllr Roger Jones that plans to extend the rank on The Parade were to be put on hold because of a lack of funds.
However, county council workmen started work yesterday (Thursday) morning on the rank's extension, much to the confusion of Grayson Mitchell who owns Express Taxis and has campaigned for 18 months.
He said: 'Liskeard has around 30 licensed drivers, yet we only have space for a couple of taxis.
'Just recently, the licensing agency issued two more licenses in the town.
'So they are getting our licence money, which goes into thousands of pounds, yet provide limited places to park.'
Workmen at the scene confirmed that the rank is being extended by one metre.
Mr Grayson said: 'I don't understand what's going on, it's only being extended by a metre, which won't make much difference.
'I was hoping they would extend it by three metres so that another car would be able to fit in. If I had known the battle all along was for one metre I wouldn't have bothered.'
