A few weeks ago, I preached that in every valley there is a victory. That’s what we need to focus on. Look back on any historical disaster, any time of trial and you can find growth, change and much goodness. Go on, pick one. Pick something hideous.... WW1? An atrocious, many would argue, needless waste of life. Look at what that did for equality, for community...I’m not saying that the good outweighs the bad, but I am saying that there was good, much good. When this is all over, we and the coming generations will look back and say, that’s when the world rediscovered love. God will say, that’s when they took a giant step in learning to love one another. Oh yes, we have the selfish idiots who threaten to ruin everything and no doubt will cause unnecessary harm along the way. They are unavoidable. Humanity breeds them and they are found in every history book too. The majority however, will find the feast table in this valley and they will grow and rediscover priorities which have become lost in our fast paced world. This is week 1, just consider what I alone have learned.....
Today, I sat in my church and prayed for individuals and communities. I haven’t done that in that way for some time. Today I walked on our coast path with my children without the pressure of my watch urging me to do the next thing in my diary. Today, I sat and embroidered for hours and whilst I did that, I listened to 4 sermons, I joined worship in Cheltenham, in London, in Truro, in Oxford. I worshipped with friends I have not worshipped with for years, and yes, I actually worshipped. I rarely do that as it’s my job to lead others in worship. Today, I prayed whilst sewing - a pastime which heals and sustains me. Today I was incredibly surprised to be filled with the Holy Spirit whilst in my front room, alone. Others felt the same, I received a message from an older member of my flock expressing similar experiences. Today my children have connected with friends from school electronically. As parents we have connected; people I didn’t know the name of and only said a quick hello to on a rushed school run have now become my lifeline as we strive to home educate our children. We have set up book clubs, each family reading the same book - together. When was the last time we sat down as a family and read the same book? Each Friday, we unite as families by all watching the same film at the same time. These groups are duplicated for the adults. This week I and over 600 people in my town have pledged in different ways to help those who are isolated. My 5 year old put cards in every letterbox in our street with our number and offer for help. She was proud to do that and learned a desire to show kindness. This week, my selfish teenager asked how he could earn money to supplement those who would struggle financially during his crisis. He has been given an opportunity to demonstrate the generosity which is in his heart. Friends, these months will be hard, they will be scary and we will all be affected by this virus in some way or another. We are in a valley, but it’s in the valleys, in the dark times when God works his miracles. There are feast tables to be had and our challenge as a human race is to find those feast tables. When we are back out on the mountain top, we will look back and we will say “that dark time in that valley, that’s when God moulded us, reshaped us, refocused us on what is important in life. The greatest commandment is this; ‘love your God with all your heart and all your soul and all your mind and love your neighbour as yourself’
