A YOUNGSTER who walked and picked up litter on each of the 40 days of Lent is the star ‘womble’ of a group inspiring new members around the world.

Tilly Day, eight, is one of many local children who are part of Wombling Free, a Facebook group for anyone who likes the idea of combining daily exercise with helping to clean up their local area.

The idea began with teachers Gareth Price and Oli Jones in Liskeard, who went onto Facebook to encourage others to get involved.

Having begun as the Caradon Wombles, the group soon changed its name to reflect the fact that people further afield were posting their photos and experiences.

In recent weeks, Wombling Free has gained momentum and now has more than 500 members, mainly in Liskeard and surrounding villages, but including people in New Zealand.

And while there is always, sadly, litter to pick up somewhere, members of the group and the public are now really noticing that some popular routes in Liskeard and surrounding villages are much less messy than before.

“The group is a forum for community, family or individual litter-picking missions,” said Gareth.

“It is open to all ages, has an inclusive ethos and promotes member well-being through being outdoors and taking positive action. Your own litter picks can be big or small, urban, coastal or rural and entail a short walk up your street, or a running litter-pick (plogging.)

“A basic safety protocol is recommended which states simply that participants should wear gloves, bring a bag or two and a high-viz top if picking up on roads.”

Oli Jones explained how he and Gareth had set up the site last year with the intention of organising group litter-picks and runs.

“That all had to go on hold,” he said, “but now, the group has really taken off online.

“We are so inspired by the children taking part.

“A big well done to everyone involved so far, and particularly Tilly, who whilst still at primary school, set about doing a litter pick every single day during Lent. She is truly a legend.

“My Scout group, the 1st Liskeard Scouts, are also on board.

“Thanks go to KV Accounting Solutions of Pensilva, PB running, 3D Lab, and Red Treads Tyres, who have donated litter-pick hoops, hi-viz jackets and grabbers to our group.”

Over the school Easter holidays, Oli and Gareth are encouraging people to take part in a “Challenge 7”. Everyone who takes part in a litter-pick on seven consecutive days before April 18, and posts pictures on the Wombling Free Facebook page, will have their names entered into a draw with prizes donated by local businesses.
