IN the report (Cornish Times, page 80, 07.09.07) I see it's chestnut time again and here we go round the mulberry bush. When there is adverse publicity surrounding the Scylla, up pop Sheryll Murray and Dave Peake blaming the spoil dump. The spoil dump was in use many years before the Scylla was sunk (three years ago). So if silting was suspected in Polhawn Cove, why was Scylla sunk some one-and-a-half to two miles further down the bay and about three-quarters of a mile off the Happy Valley beach area by Trenninow Cliffs? Mrs Murray and Mr Peake advocate the cessation of dumping. Why not cease diving activities when adverse weather conditions cause silt to be held in suspension making the water murky and causing a strong tidal undertow? If the Scylla has been such a major tourist attraction and it contributes greatly to the economy of South East Cornwall, why haven't the residents of the Rame Peninsula seen any benefits? It was reported previously that the Scylla was an accident waiting to happen, time has proved this to be just so. The National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth had grandiose schemes for the Scylla, like submarine and glass bottom boat trips, and a restricted area for their controlled use. All it seems have fallen by the wayside. So, why not admit Scylla is not the best thing since sliced bread and let the ship rust in peace(s)?
