THERE was a hero's welcome for Olympic medalist Cassie Patten when she returned 'home' to meet her fans.

Dozens of supporters gathered at Lux Park Leisure Centre in Liskeard on Tuesday night, when the 21-year-old swimmer received a bouquet of flowers and a vase from civic dignitaries to commemorate her achievements.

Cassie, who used to work as a lifeguard at the leisure centre, stayed for more than an hour after the presentation to sign autographs and pose for photographs with around 80 fans.

The former Cardinham, Fowey and St Cleer schoolgirl said: 'I did not expect such a welcome – it's been wonderful just to say "thank you" to everyone who has supported me so much.'

Cassie, who now lives and trains in Manchester, said she was not used to the spotlight but was enjoying life after returning to her parents' house in St Cleer following her heroic efforts in the 10k open swim – in which she earned a bronze medal – and the 800m freestyle, where she reached the final.

Caradon District Council chairman Paul Adams said: 'We are absolutely delighted to welcome Cassie to Lux Park as an example of what can be achieved through hard work, dedication and determination.

'If you want role models, children, this is the lady you should be looking to.'

Cassie was joined for photographs with her sister 17-year-old Lucy, who is also a lifeguard at the leisure centre, and mum Zandra.

She spent the rest of the week 'on tour', visiting her former schools in Cornwall and Devon, and will return to full training next month.
