Bottom side Menheniot-Looe gave Lea-gue leaders Troon a real scare before going down by four wickets in an enthralling encounter. Troon had won all their League games since a local derby defeat to long-time leaders Redruth way back on April 24 and had reached the quarter-finals of the National Village Knockout Cup. So Menheniot-Looe knew they would have to be at their best to challenge after a long drive west to windy Treslothan Road.

Having elected to bat on what looked like a firm, true wicket, the visitors were soon in trouble with Pete Nance and Sam Higgins both departing for ducks.

Skipper Mark Grassam and veteran Hugh Rogers rebuilt the innings with a measured partnership of 55, before former Cornwall opening bowler Lee Caddy trapped Grassam lbw for 23 with a crafty slower ball.

Rogers followed two overs later for 28, bowled by a big turning off break from Mark Jenkin. This brought Robin Trethowan and Mike Maiden together, and they attacked the spinners to wrest the initiative back, adding 51 in quick time to take the score to 115 for four from 36 overs, at which point a total of 200 looked possible. But Caddy, charging in for his second spell, downhill, downwind and with dogged determination, bowled Trethowan for 31, and Maiden, having called for his helmet having tried to hook a Caddy bouncer, played the same shot the next ball to another vicious bouncer, only to crash his bat into his stumps and be out hit wicket for 24.
