Communities and workplaces around South East Cornwall will fall silent at 11am this morning as people pause to remember those who have lost their lives in conflict.
Armistice Day commemorations are being staged in towns and villages throughout the district, and activities continue this week and through to Remembrance Sunday, November 14.
Here is a guide to where you can join in with a two-minute silence today (Thursday November 11) and with other Remembrance commemorations:
In Liskeard, residents are being invited to join the local RBL branch for a two-minute silence outside Webb’s House on The Parade at 11am on November 11.
While the Remembrance Day Parade on Sunday, November 14, has been cancelled, a wreath-laying ceremony and Act of Remembrance will still be happening at the war memorial, followed by a church service at St Martin’s Church at 11.15am.
Activities for Remembrancetide in Looe this year will also be low-key.
Today, Armistice Day, November 11, a small ceremony will be staged by Looe RBL and will be live streamed on the Looe Town Council Facebook page. The service will start at around 10.45am with a two-minute silence at 11am. There will be no parade for Remembrance Sunday on November 14.
Organisations and individuals are invited to lay wreaths in the days leading up to Remembrance Sunday, when Looe RBL will once more be holding a small ceremony, which again will be live streamed.
A spokesperson for Looe RBL said: “The ceremony at Looe War Memorial will start at approximately 10.45am. Everyone is welcome to attend but the latest COVID-19 regulations must be maintained. “There will be two minutes silence at eleven o’clock and a bugler to play the ‘Last Post’.
“Although there will be no formal laying of poppy wreaths, they can still be handed in at the ceremony for display at the memorial. Alternatively, wreaths can be laid outside of the ceremony by organisations, or individuals, at a time and date, near to Remembrance Sunday, that is convenient to them.”
Poppy wreaths for the Armistice commemorations can be obtained from the Looe Royal British Legion by phoning Poppy Appeal organisers, David and Annette Bryan, on 01503 264130.
In Torpoint, local children will be joining in as a two-minute silence is marked this morning at Sparrow Park. Muster at 10.45am.
Up at HMS Raleigh, a new memorial garden is to be dedicated in memory of submariners who have lost their lives in the service of their country. Commander Steven Waller, the Officer Commanding the Royal Navy Submarine School, will sow the first poppy seeds into the soil of the garden, which has been dug in the shape of a submarine. The garden is also intended as a lasting memorial to the Submarine School, which is due to move to HM Naval Base Clyde in Scotland in 2024.
Tomorrow (November 12), a short Remembrance presentation will take place at Torpoint Nursery and Infant School, by invitation only.
A full Remembrance Parade is set to take place on Sunday November 14. Participants are asked to muster in Albion Road by 10.20am with the procession to set off at 10.40am for a short service and wreath laying at Elliot Square.
Representatives of Torpoint’s RBL, RNA and Town Council will attend HMS Raleigh’s Remembrance ceremony at Horson Cemetery.
In Callington, volunteers worked hard to pull together a beautiful and poignant display in the town centre in time for Remembrance.
Handmade poppy panels have been placed around the war memorial, and with the help of Callington’s fire crew, the ‘Poppy Wave’ installation was put up at St Mary’s Church.
The church will be the location for a Remembrance service to be held on November 14. Meet at the New Road Car Park at 2.30pm, for a parade down to the church led by the Town Council, Callington and District RBL, Callington Town Band and other organisations.
A small ceremony will be held outside first, with the names of the fallen read out, and poppy wreaths to be placed at the memorial, before the church service takes place. Participants will then march back up to the car park where they will be dismissed, and onto the Town Hall for refreshments.
In Saltash, while a Festival of Remembrance was cancelled due to the pandemic, the Royal British Legion is going ahead with other events over the Remembrance period.
A two-minute silence will be held at 11am today outside The Brunel Inn.
Meanwhile, residents are invited to take part in a Remembrance parade on Sunday, November 14, but the preceding church service will be for invited guests only, says the Town Council, due to the continued risk posed by COVID-19.
“We realise this will be disappointing to many members of the community, but we have to keep everyone safe,” said a Council spokesperson.
“The service will be streamed live on Zoom for those who wish to participate.”
The parade will leave Wesley Church in Saltash at around 3pm to march to the war memorial at St Nicholas and St Faith Church, where wreaths will be laid.
Anyone who plans to attend the parade or who wishes to join the service via Zoom should contact [email protected] or call 01752 844846.
