Violence in Northern Ireland
By and large, or so it seems to me, media reportage of the problems in implementation of the Good Friday Agreement tend to portray the Unionist faction as the obstructionist element.
And, regarding events at Drumcree, I am rather sick of hearing on the radio, about how the Orangemen want to march down the 'mainly Nationalist/Catholic Garvaghy Road'. They just want to use a public thoroughfare.
We must not lose sight of the fact that the whole sorry state of affairs in Northern Ireland derives from the violent means adopted by a separatist terrorist organisation.
I have no time whatsoever for the bigots and zealots of the Orange Order, with their banners, drums and ridiculous bowler hats.
But I wonder how we, on this side of the Irish Sea, would feel if there was government action to interfere with our right to march in an orderly manner along a public highway or to lay down rules about how we celebrate, say, November 5 - Guy Fawkes Day?
