Eight Cornishmen took part in a challenge to complete a 300-mile journey around Cornwall on vintage tractors in three days.
When Edward Buckland first thought up the idea he invited friends Martin Dyer and John Perry to join him on their Massey Ferguson tractors. However, word quickly spread and several others joined them on their journey. Stephen Buckland, Will Curtis, Luke Wallis and Kevin Bennett drove their Massey Fergusons while Dave Sawyer joined in with a recovery lorry. The group raised £12,000 for charities RABI and Children’s Hospice South West.
Every year the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI) gives out grants of around £2m to farming people in financial hardship. In 2017, RABI gave out more than £72,000 in Cornwall alone.
The group set off from Land’s End to start their trip around the county.
Edward said: “Some of these people didn’t know each other well, but they behaved like family, a proper bit of teamwork.
“Everyone had responsibility for navigating their own leg of the journey. Kevin, who’s had years of experience delivering diesel all over the county, took us to some places we’d never heard of. We saw some absolutely stunning parts of Cornwall.”
The group finished their journey back where they started at Land’s End.
Edward said: “It went better than we could have hoped for. The oldest tractor was 60 and the youngest 50, but they just ran like a dream.”
