LOCAL people are speaking out against the continued dumping of dredged silt in Whitsand Bay, as campaigners await to hear the date of a judicial review.

A fundraising drive to collect £2,000 towards the court costs and other expenses associated with the review of how the dumping licence was granted has exceeded its target and now stands at more than £3,000.

Around 80 people gave their support to a 'Stop the Dumping' photoshoot in Millbrook, where more than £100 was raised in the space of around two hours.

Cindy and Dave Arscott said that the Stop Dumping in Whitsand Bay (SDWB) campaign had raised their awareness.

'Until I saw the underwater photographs of the bay, I had no idea how badly affected the seabed was by the dumping,' said Cindy.

'People think it's disgusting if they see people fly-tipping in hedgerows or dumping litter in a way that affects wildlife. This is just as bad – the difference being, we can't actually see it.'

Group member Tonny Steenhagen said of the photoshoot: 'There was a fantastic response – it was very heartening to see that lots of people were more than happy to put their face to the campaign.'

The High Court is still to set a date for the judicial review.
