PEOPLE living in Crafthole say they have had enough of large lorries causing damage and traffic jams in the village – and MP Sheryll Murray has joined residents in calling for urgent help from Cornwall Council to address the situation.

In the latest of a series of incidents where vehicles have damaged property, two 30kg slabs were knocked off the roof of a cottage. The owners of the cottage, who were away at the time, said that the spot the slabs fell is where their family stands when waiting to cross the road – and that it was the third time to their knowledge that their home has been hit.

Many in Crafthole say that the number of heavy vehicles using the village's narrow road has increased significantly in recent years. Residents living alongside the B3742 say that their quality of life is affected by noise, traffic jams and associated bad language, and the light into their homes being blocked.

'The B3742 has become the only access to the Rame Peninsula for the massive juggernauts that are destroying our lives,' said parish councillor Peter McLaren.

'We have a road that is no more than 11ft wide in some places. The size and amount of traffic is not tolerable any more.'

Cllr McLaren also believes that leaks and bursts that have occurred in the village's sewerage and water systems may well be attributable to compaction of the roads by heavy vehicles.

Chair of Sheviock Parish Council Chris Kennedy said that a letter had been written to Cornwall Council Highways Department. He said: 'We'd like them to consider a limitation on the size of vehicles that go through the village.'

Cornwall councillor for Rame Peninsula George Trubody said that he was in the process of arranging a site meeting between the parish council and Cormac to look at short-term and possibly longer-term solutions.

MP Sheryll Murray, said that she would insist that County Highways holds an urgent meeting.

She said; 'I think very large lorries using Crafthole is unacceptable.'

Cornwall Council said that Cormac will be making contact with the parish council to arrange a meeting.
