ORDERS at a social enterprise producing organic fruit and veg in South East Cornwall have ‘gone berserk’ since the lockdown measures were introduced.
At Keveral Community of Growers in Downderry, the team are currently working flat-out to cultivate and plant as well as get deliveries out to the large numbers of people now requesting boxes.
‘We are open for business and actively supporting our community,’ said Keveral’s Jim Candy.
‘We’re here to deliver to everyone and particularly those in self-isolation.
‘The veg box scheme has gone berserk. We had a 50 per cent increase in orders last week and expect a 100 per cent rise this week and probably still more coming.’
This time of year is commonly known amongst farmers and market gardeners as the ‘hunger gap’ when winter stores run out but new produce is not quite yet ready to harvest.
But the recent spell of warm weather is helping to hurry the new season along, says Jim.
‘The team are very busy cultivating and planting, as well as getting the deliveries out, taking all the recommended precautions.’
