MILESTONE celebrations to commemorate the end of the Second World War in Europe could still take place - but in August.

Liskeard Town Council has said that its VE Day events will not take place in May, but that it hopes the activities planned could take place on the 75th anniversary of Victory In Japan (VJ) Day. The Council says it will review the situation nearer the time.

Liskeard’s Mayor, Rachel Brooks said: ’It is with great sadness that we have had to postpone the public events planned to commemorate VE Day 75 in May.’

Meanwhile, events have also been put on hold in Bodmin and in Saltash.

Bodmin Town Council said: ’We are awaiting further information as to whether there will be a new national date on which this important occasion can be celebrated.

’BTC would like to extend their sincere thanks to everyone who has given their valuable time and effort in the planning of what was shaping up to be a fantastic day. We are confident that, when we are able to celebrate, the plans that have been put in place thus far will result in a wonderful and memorable event for the town.’

Saltash Town Council said its celebrations were postponed and it is monitoring the situation.
