Athletes from across Cornwall are shaping up for Urban Survivor, the South West’s first urban obstacle race, on Saturday, February 27.
Falmouth is the setting for obstacle race experts Tuff Enuff’s latest challenge taking runners through streets, parks, castle and coastline, challenging entrants to negotiate massive obstacles both man-made and natural along with diverse terrain.
The race starts at zone one, at the Dracaena Centre, and features an obstacle entitled Chaos; a sense-confusing, smoke-filled narrow chamber. Zone 2, at The Moor, showcases a new challenge called The Trapped Rat; a tunnel-based, water-filled obstacle that competitors will have to enter backwards and on their backs with only inches between the water and the wire covering the tunnels. Also, at The Moor, is a thigh-bursting race up the 111 steps of Jacob’s Ladder.
The Slip Dip in zone 3, at Event Square, is the first plunge into the sea where runners have to clamber from the waves via a cargo net. Event Square is also home to the largest obstacle: the infamous half pipe. Zone 4, at Pendennis Castle, is the largest area of obstacles with rope climbs, monkey bars, water skips, castle walls and so much more.
Access to Pendennis is free for spectators.
Gyllyngvase Beach is the site for the fifth and final zone and is also the finish for Urban Survivor 2016. Entrants face the freezing Cornish ocean and a gruelling set of obstacles.
Gylly Beach Café is the venue for the Urban Survivor after party with live music for all spectators and participants to enjoy, as well as great food.
All entrants will receive a medal and a limited edition T-shirt. There will be first, second and third prizes in a men’s and women’s section. Junior competitors are also encouraged to enter a special Tuff Nutt 4km course with 20 obstacles designed to challenge and excite budding junior obstacle course runners.
