A group of 60 mainly 'Sassenach' Twinners gathered at the Masonic Hall Torpoint to celebrate the life and works of the 'Immortal Bard' Rabbie Burns, with a traditional supper. This turned out to be a colourful and dynamic occasion and the hall was transformed into the "Lairds Castle" with various tartan hangings draped around the walls. There was hand painted Scottish scenery, claymores and shields to add authenticity. The scene set, the traditional ceremony began with piper Rabb McLintock, piping the company in to dinner. After a few welcoming words from the Chairman Eric Fincher, the Selkirk Grace was recited. The delicious cock-a-leekie soup was served, followed by the long-awaited moment when the haggis was reverently paraded past the company, to the skirl o' the pipes, accompanied by a slow handclap from the diners. The dirk was then raised, as the famous words of 'To a Haggis' rang out and the entrails exploded over the serving dish with 'amber bead'. The Haggis was then toasted with a wee dram, and the evening progressed in 'gud spirit' with toasts to Rabbie Burns, the lassies and the laddies. Finally the company was led in a rendering of Burns' poem 'Address to the Unco Guid'. The 'twinners' had a wonderful evening, full of sound, colour and laughter, and raised more than £250 from the event. Chairman Eric Fincher thanked everyone for such a brilliant effort, which made the evening possible.
