In today’s edition of the Cornish Times we carry a tribute to Norman Pampling, a four-times former mayor of Liskeard whose funeral was held this week.
Norman has been described as a ‘legend in Liskeard’; he received the MBE in 2012 for his contributions to community life.
Many who knew Norman described him as an unassuming man - but his achievements for Liskeard were many.
During his first term as mayor, he started the town’s twinning link with Quimperle in Brittany, and was particularly proud to sign the Twinning Charter.
Norman became a member of the Royal British Legion in 1953 and over his decades with the branch he served in various roles. While chairman, he was part of a committee responsible for building the Kenneth Launder flats, accommodation in Liskeard for former service personnel.
Over the years he and his wife Christine raised many thousands of pounds for the various charities they supported.
Mayor Christina Whitty has described Norman Pampling as a ‘good friend, a great man, and a hard act to follow’.
