It is hoped the noise created mainly by youths as they leave the Admiral Boscarn and Bar One on the sea front, East Looe, as they make their way up through the town, the subject of past petitions and complaints by residents in the area, will be alleviated by the introduction of a taxi stand close by at the end of licensing hours, for a trial period.

At their meeting on Monday night, town councillors considered the idea from the Devon and Cornwall Police Authority, and decided to give it a try, although they did not think it would have much bearing on the present problem.

Councillor Don Webb, also chairman of East Looe Town Trust, thought the taxis might be a problem to the nearby private parking spaces.

'Years ago the taxis were offered a rank down by the library but they turned it down' he said. However, he agreed it was worth giving the present suggestion a try.

Councillor Wally Scarah said that on average about 500 people poured out of the Boscarn at the weekends and he couldn't see how 3-4 taxis waiting outside would make much difference to the numbers going home through the streets.

The discussion raised the issue of taxis in Looe in general, and there was criticism of taxis parking in Fore Street on a regular basis and causing obstruction. Councillors complained they should only be in the town on business and should not be waiting in the streets, but nothing was done about it.

Councillor David Peat said it was time to consider a permanent taxi rank somewhere within the town, which was backed by P C Barry Mills.

Councillor Les Young suggested outside the Health Centre and proposed considering the taxi issue at the council's next transport committee meeting.
