A FAMILY event in the park tomorrow (Saturday) is set to bring Liskeard’s Heritage Unlocked week to a fun close.
Hundreds of people have enjoyed the chance to explore the town and its stories as buildings and places usually closed to the public opened their doors.
Westbourne House was a particularly popular venue, as it’s the first time recently this prominent property has been open to the public. Many took the opportunity to see the original features still in place under the modern partitions and fixtures. St Martin’s, the Methodist and Catholic churches, the Pipewell in Fore Street and the gardens at Pendean House were also open.
The local food market was well attended and shoppers browsing the stalls were entertained by the Liskerrett male voice choir.
A set of cookery demonstration videos went live at the beginning of the event, showcasing local shops and produce, and these can still be seen on the Liskeard Unlocked page of VisitLiskeard.co.uk.
The food theme continued with talks by Dale Wood on bees and Brian Oldham on Liskeard’s larders in times gone by, both of which were very well received. Brian’s online talk attracted participants from as far away as the US and Portugal.
On Sunday Brian led a stroll around the sites of former food shops and eateries, followed by a guided walk and talk with geologist Callum Beeson, highlighting the history of the stonework in five prominent Liskeard buildings.
Town Councillor Rachel Brooks, who chaired the organising group, said: “The challenge again this year was to find ways people could safely participate in Liskeard Unlocked. It was great to see so many enjoying the events and I’d like to thank everyone who opened their buildings and worked be-hind the scenes to make it so successful.”
Liskeard Unlocked culminates in a Tea Treat event tomorrow (Saturday, September 18).
Come to Castle Park from 2pm, bring some outdoor food, and join in with the fun including a teddy bears’ picnic for younger children, with judging of the best dressed teddy at 3pm.
There will also be tea-time treats from The Real Junk Food Project; a chance to try the Liskeard Bun; entertainment with magician Billy Wiz; a self-guided nature trail; nature displays, and food displays and demonstrations. People will be able to find out more on community gardening and free local cookery classes.
The event is being supported by Making Space for Nature, Liskeard Together, Cornwall Housing, Liskeard Hive and the Caradon Orchard Group.
