TRAVELLERS who have been parked without permission on a field on the outskirts of Liskeard have this week been served with a notice to leave.

Caravans belonging to the travellers began arriving a number of weeks ago. They began setting up a camp on a field earmarked for a housing development next to the Callington Road roundabout at Addington to the north of the town.

The situation was being monitored by Cornwall Council after complaints about the site which had recently begun spreading outside the field onto the roadside.

In a statement a county council spokesperson said: 'The council, in response to concerns raised and impact upon the local environment, has issued the unauthorised encampment with a formal notice to leave within the next 14 days.

'This has been done, taking into account the authority's duties to both local residents and the rights of the travelling community. The council will continue to monitor the situation.'

Some of the travellers have already started leaving.

Meanwhile five caravans were seen yesterday behind the former TopPhoto premises in the town centre.
