PLANS for a new traffic scheme in the centre of Torpoint have met with opposition from the town council and the local police.
The council has voted against the Cornwall County Council scheme which would involve placing a new pelican crossing on Harvey Street, the main traffic route through the town, making part of Fore Street one-way for vehicles and closing some junctions to motorists.
Torpoint Mayor Stan Martin held a site meeting with Cornwall Highways to discuss details of the scheme. The new crossing would be near a bend in the main road and several existing junctions. Mr Martin said: "I have heard strong opinions against the scheme from residents. The town council was unanimously opposed. Inspector Ray Day from the Torpoint policing area has also written a letter on behalf of the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary opposing the scheme.
