An unpopular traffic calming scheme will have cost taxpayers more than £70,000 when work to alter it is complete. Tailbacks have become a frequent problem on Castle Street, Liskeard, since a prioritised traffic system was put in place in October 2009.
The changes, which give vehicles leaving the town priority, caused outrage amongst motorists, many who claimed the scheme, which cost £29,000, had not made the road safer.
Following a period of public consultation Cornwall Council announced that traffic lights would be installed, a move that will cost taxpayers an estimated £43,000.
