TRAFFIC calming measures could be introduced to stop heavy goods vehicles using a narrow street in Liskeard. Residents of Castle Street are concerned about the large volume of traffic passing by their properties, leaving houses damaged and the street too dangerous to cross. Home owners formed an action group to try and tackle the problem in September 2006. As a result they have petitioned Cornwall County Council's Highways Agency to introduce traffic calming measures to encourage drivers to use Charter Way for access to the town centre. At meeting last week, a representative from the Highways Agency informed residents that the council is looking at introducing a vehicle-activated sign to divert heavy goods vehicles away from the street. However, resident James Hoskin expressed his concern and felt that guidance alone would not be enough. 'Drivers will not take much notice of a sign when they can cut five minutes off the delivery time,' said James, who has had plant pots damaged by vehicles driving past his house. It is expected that some sort of traffic calming measures will be introduced next year.
