TWENTY-five traders from the Saltash Carkeel Industrial Estate voiced their complaints and concerns at a special meeting at Saltash Guildhall on Wednesday evening. Representatives of Saltash Town Council, Caradon Council and County Council attended the meeting, which was chaired by Saltash Town Councillor, Bruce Reid. David Carter, Saltash Deputy Mayor and Caradon and Town Councillor gave a presentation about industrial estates to open the meeting. The first complaint was about illegal parking and cars left on the estate, causing obstructions. Police Sgt Andy Dunstan said the traffic warden and the community support officer patrolled the area on a regular basis and reported the matter. The problems are being addressed by the Police. Another trader complained about the large lorries, narrow road and wide pavement. Brian Craven, Area Surveyor for Cornwall County Council said they knew the problem and it was a question of finance. Steve Ewing, county surveyor, said they had discussed parking restrictions and illegal parking, agreeing that the road needed widening. 'We need finance,' he said 'But we also welcome comments from the traders about the estate.' Roger Dymond of RD Industries agreed that the lorries often prevented him from reaching his premises on the estate. He said that if things did not improve he would have to leave Saltash and find premises elsewhere. He also complained about dumping of vehicle tyres on the estate. Trader Greg Page of VSW spoke about the 'horrible smells' on the estate which he said made him feel quite sick, 'We should not have to work in these conditions' he added. Chairman Bruce Reid said it was not certain if the smells were coming from ham packing or from drains in the area. Mick Bullock of Caradon Council said that when the Environmental Health department received complaints they could do something about it and if necessary prosecute. It was suggested that a sub committee be formed by the traders to meet four time a year but only two traders were in favour of this idea.
