A TAKEAWAY franchise has pledged to help volunteers keep their town tidy following complaints about litter.

Subway opened its franchise in Callington at the end of March. When manager Stuart Priest and nominated franchisee Pete Ewing learned that there had been complaints about Subway wrappers appearing in the streets, they were quick to take action.

The branch has produced a sign, urging customers to put their litter in a bin – or take it home.

And staff members got involved in a town litter pick along with a large group of residents.

The Callington Volunteer Litter Pick group was founded just over a year ago, and has collected more than three tonnes of rubbish during that time.

Leader Mikkie Raphael said that support from Callington Town Council and local businesses with equipment, premises, refreshments and manpower had enabled the group to flourish.

‘None of this would have been possible without the amazing volunteers who give up their time to clear up our town,’ he said.

‘ I can only hope it continues in the same direction and I look forward to working with other groups and organisations around the town. We are well on the way to beating our total of last year with a current count of 100+ bags collected already. Here’s to a litter free 2018.’
