DEVELOPERS have confirmed that plans to build a new supermarket on the outskirts of Callington will include a new petrol station – something that the town has been without since last month. The Cornish Times revealed last December that Walker Developments, based in Newquay, were planning to put forward plans for a new supermarket on the outskirts of town. But, since then, nothing has come to fruition and the twon has since lost its only petrol station. However, the company have assured that they are still planning to go forward with the project. A spokesperson for Walker Developments said: 'The proposal for a new supermarket in Callington is still going forward, but the information that needs to be submitted is taking longer to collect than had been anticipated. Information 'The problem has been nothing more than getting the right information together to put forward a confident application. Although we are reluctant to set a definite submission date, what we can say is that a petrol station is in the plans.' The announcement that a petrol station is in the plans will be welcome news for the town, as their only petrol station closed down last month, following the strike by fuel tanker drivers. Callington town councillor Andrew Long said: 'Since the closure of our only petrol station, the desire to get another one is more desperate than ever. 'I am encouraged by the fact that an application will be going forward, and I am very interested in seeing the plans in due course.' The plans of the development company were revealed at a council meeting in December, and councillors welcomed the idea, hoping that it would keep residents of the town from leaving to shop elsewhere. It is still not known which supermarket will arrive if the plans go through, but the developers remain confident that it will be one of the big four.
