What a hoot at library!

A GROUP of owls will be visiting Torpoint Library next week.

Three or four owls from the Screech Owl Sanctuary at Goss Moor will be the focus of attention at the library's school half-term holiday activity for children.

The event, which takes place between 10am and 11am on Friday, October 26, is entitled Owls in the Library - What a Hoot!

Library manager Kate Wilton said: "It is the first time owls have visited the library. Children can have a close encounter with the owls and hear a talk about them. Admission is by ticket only and these are available at £1 each from the library."

Today (Friday, October 19) the library is holding a Celtic Celebration as part of the Caradon Arts and Culture Festival. The event will feature Celtic art, crafts, music, food and drink.

Vandals cause problems

at the business park

FIGURES from the police show that the number of reported crimes in Torpoint this year is continuing to run at a far lower level than last year.

Up to the middle of September there were 355 crimes reported compared to 492 in the same period in 2000.

Car crime accounted for 16 of the latest incidents. There were also seven thefts, two reports of damage, five burglaries, three assaults, one case of harassment and two involving drunkenness, one arson attack and one drug offence.

The police have praised a meeting held with residents at Trelawney Rise where there has been concern over the level of crime.

Meanwhile, youths have continued to cause problems at the Trevol Business Park.

The youth club on the business park has closed down and has been subjected to vandalism. There have also been reports of hooliganism which has included setting a vehicle on fire.

Ceremony remembers sailor

A TORPOINT sailor who died when his ship was attacked in World War II has been remembered during a ceremony in the Channel Islands.

Torpoint town councillor Mike Pearn and his wife Val attended a memorial weekend on Guernsey to remember those who lost their lives when the British cruiser, HMS Charybdis, was sunk by a German submarine in 1943.

Mr Pearn, who first attended the annual memorial weekend when he was mayor of Torpoint four years ago, laid a wreath in memory of Frank Bradford who came from the town and is buried at Fulon Cemetery on Guernsey.

The frigate, HMS Sutherland, commanded by Captain Paul Thomas from Fowey, was in Guernsey for the memorial weekend.
