Town hall scheme

to take 35 weeks

THE project to upgrade Torpoint's town hall is set to take around 35 weeks.

A tender valued at £493,169 from Westframe Construction for the project was accepted by Torpoint Town Council at its last meeting.

Town Mayor Stan Martin said that the building contractor will aim to finish the project at the Council Chambers in York Road in May next year.

Access for disabled people will be improved at the complex, the kitchen is being revamped, bar facilities which people can use at their own functions will be installed, the Torpoint Archives will be provided with a new location in the buildings and a facility will be created which could be used by a National Health Service dentist.

However, a proposal to turn the main hall and committee room into one larger area has not being taken up because it was judged not to be cost-effective.

The complex is used by various community groups as well as the town council.

Mr Martin said: "The contractor is meeting with the people who regularly use the premises to discuss the project.

"Westframe are going to do the work in such a way that the building does not need to be shut down completely. They are aiming for as little disruption as possible.

"However, the badminton club will need to re-arrange their fixtures.

"Obviously with the age and condition of the building some extra work may be revealed by the builders but we are not expecting any major extras."
