Bands line up for

third pop festival

THE third annual Lawnstock music and arts festival is set to take place in Torpoint tomorrow (Saturday, September 16).

Seven bands are lined up to play the pop festival at the Lawns in Thanckes Park with live music beginning at 3pm and going through until midnight.

The previous two festivals attracted hundreds of music fans and raised around £2,200 for the town's new skateboard park and multi-games area. This year the event will be raising money for other local causes. The organising committee has already pledged to sponsor new kit for the Torpoint Youth under-10 football team.

Nick Wood, who has been co-ordinating the festival, said: "The event will open at 12 noon. There will be an arts and crafts fair as well as a children's entertainer.

"Arts students will be taking video of the whole event and later a video maybe available for people to buy. We may also use the video to promote next year's festival.

"The Lawns has a capacity of 1,500 at any one time and last year we had at least 2,000 people at the event on the day.

"We have advertised the festival further afield this year in more areas of Cornwall and Plymouth."

The bands come from Plymouth and Cornwall. The first on stage will be 50 Gramz. They will be followed by Musicool from Torpoint. The other bands due to take part are Rhys Crispies Dectet, Fall Out, Break Out, Piledriver and Freak Show.

Admission to the main arena costs £3. The same charge is being made for the dance tent which will be in action from 7.30pm. Under-14s will be charged £1.

New creche

will give

mums a break

A NEW creche for pre-school children has officially begun in Torpoint.

The creche is the idea of Trevorder Families Centre community worker Claire Oakley.

She said: "The creche will give parents a chance to have a break from their children. It will run every Tuesday afternoon between 1pm and 3pm during school term time.

"The cost is £2 for the first child and £1 each for other children in the same family.

"The creche at the centre is fully registered with Social Services and has qualified staff.

"So far there has been an average of five children at the creche each week. We would like to see this number increase."

Meanwhile, a Parents, Babies and Tots Group has been running at the centre since June.

The group, which meets on a Friday morning between 10am and noon, is open to all parents with young children.

Parents have a chance to chat while the children can play with toys.

Health visitor assistant Emma Hough regularly visits the group to hold baby clinics.

Twinning visit

MORE than 20 visitors from Torpoint's twin town of Benodet in Brittany have spent a long weekend in South-East Cornwall.

The Troiseme Age (Third Age) group was welcomed by the Mayor of Torpoint, Stan Martin, who is also the chairperson of the Torpoint and District Twinning Association.

The visitors stayed in various homes in and around Torpoint and enjoyed a visit to Bodmin which was organised by Ruth Parsons of Wilcove.

A reception was held at the Mayor's Parlour in Torpoint and was hosted by Mr Martin and his wife Christine. Later a cream tea was organised at Wilcove by Ann Ellis.

A final farewell was held at the Mosquito Sailing Club in Torpoint before the group departed for the cross-channel ferry at Millbay Docks in Plymouth.

Mr Martin said the weekend had been really enjoyable.

Big Brew-Up

TORPOINT will be taking part in the Big Brew-Up on Monday (September 18). Tea parties are being held across the country next week in aid of SSAFA Forces Help which supports servicemen, ex-servicemen and their families.

The Torpoint brew-up will be held at the Trevorder Families Centre from 11.30am on Monday. Cups of tea and coffee and slices of cake will be available in return for a donation.
