GCSE results day is almost here. For many young people, it will be one of the most nerve-racking day of their lives so far. Have they got the grades they need for what they want to do next? What happens if they don’t?

The important thing to remember is that there’s no need to panic. Whatever happens, there is always an answer. With many reports saying this has been the hardest year yet, young people should know who to turn to if they don’t make the grades.

City College Plymouth has come up with top tips on what to do on GCSE results day next week:

Tip 1 - Check what time you can pick up your results - you don’t want to miss out.

Tip 2 - Be prepared. There are a few things you should take with you: your mobile phone so you can contact family and friends (and take a selfie or two); a relative or trusted friend for moral support; and a pen, a piece of paper and a calculator - just in case - with so many different grades and numbers to get your head around, results can be confusing.

Tip 3 - Take a deep breath - try to remain calm and get plenty of sleep the night before. The best decisions are made with a clear head.

Tip 4 - Consider your surroundings - think about where you want to open your results. Do you want to be with your family, friends or on your own? If you are nervous, consider going early to miss the queues.

Tip 5 - The big reveal - whether its congratulations or commiserations, be proud of what you’ve achieved. Although it may feel like it, it’s not the end of the world if you didn’t get what you expected. Speak to a careers adviser for guidance on your next steps.
