SPEAKING at the Saltash Town Council's Policy and Resources committee last week, councillor Bruce Reid said that toilets in Alexandra Square, Saltash were in an appalling state. The cost to bring them up to standard would be in the region of £10,000 to £12,000 and he agreed with other councillors present that before Saltash Town Council took them over Caradon should first bring them up to standard. The mayor, Sue Hooper said that work was not being done to keep them clean and they were a health hazard. councillor Brian Carter agreed it would cost thousands and if the Town Council took them over they should be in good working order. councillor Joyce Mepsted agreed they should be up to standard. Councillor Martin Gee who was not present but sent in his views and said they were totally unsatisfactory. Other councillors commented that there was a vary bad smell from the toilets, and councillor Baz Gregory said that in the gent's toilet in particular, water had been switched off in the urinal area. The committee agreed to recommend to the main Council that Caradon should be contacted before any decision was made by the Town Council.
