A plan to create an amazing zipwire ride to Looe Island can be exclusively revealed in the Cornish Times today.

The Scandinavian firm behind the plan, Lapri Lofo Ltd, has told the paper of its intention to build a 100m tower on the mainland west of Hannafore, from which thrill-seekers would launch themselves towards the island.

The firm already has a track record of creating zipwire rides across fjords in Norway.

A spokesperson for the firm, Mys I Ebrel, said he hoped the scheme, costing around £250,000, would be in place at the beginning of April next year.

As well as single trip tickets, seasonal passes should also be available.

Mark Camp, manager of the Looe Tourist Information Centre, said he had received assurances that the wildlife on the island, particularly the orange-footed dogsnail, would not be affected.

‘Now I am really hoping the project can take off,’ he said.

Looe mayor Armand Toms said: ‘What a great idea, speed trips to the island!’

A spokesperson for the Cornwall Wildlife Trust, http://www.cornwallwildlifetrust.org.uk/looeisland, which owns the island, said: ‘The new zipwire will be a massive help to our work and it isn’t just for thrill-seekers. We can see some real benefits in getting provisions on and off the island.’
