Remembrance activities in Liskeard will start today (Sunday) with the dedication of the Field of Remembrance on The Parade.

This installation in memory of the fallen gives members of the public the chance to write messages in tribute to relatives and friends on simple wooden crosses, and to take a moment to reflect quietly at any time in the week leading up to Remembrance Sunday. The Field of Remembrance will stay in place until the end of Sunday November 14.

The local branch of the Royal British Legion in Liskeard has made the reluctant decision to scale back somewhat on events in the town, due to the continued high rates of the coronavirus.

Many activities will still be going ahead, however, says branch president Trevor Newbury.

Residents are invited to join Liskeard RBL in a two-minute silence outside Webb’s House on The Parade at 11am on November 11.

While the Remembrance Day Parade on Sunday, November 14, has been cancelled, a wreath-laying ceremony and Act of Remembrance will still be happening at the war memorial, followed by a church service.

“Anybody wishing to attend any of these events is more than welcome. We just encourage people to use common sense – please observe social distancing and comply with any restrictions in place at the time,” said Mr Newbury.

“The Poppy Appeal is going ahead, the collection tins will be out in the local shops and the RBL club: please support this much-needed cause.

“Liskeard RBL hope to return to normal next year if at all possible.”
