MOUNT Edgcumbe Hospice, the Arthritis Research Council and Cornwall Air Ambulance were the three charities to benefit equally from Lostwithiel golf and country club seniors' charity day, held recently.
Each charity received £290, and in addition a donation of £25 was made to Lostwithiel Community Centre. Fifty members from six other golf clubs, including Whitsand Bay, joined 22 members of the host club to take part in the individual stableford competition which was open to men over 55. St Austell Brewery provided liquid refreshments on course, and prizes were donated by Restormel Lodge hotel, the Earl of Chatham and Duchy Nursery at Lostwithiel, Roserrow golf club, Trelawney garden centre, Trago Mills, Somerfield, Tescos, Boots, WH Smiths and Woolworths stores.
Colin Baker, seniors captain, welcomed everyone and thanked the sponsors. Tribute was paid to competition secretary Ken Pendray, treasurer Eric Banks, match secretary Fred Edwards, Robert Conway in charge of the raffle and vice captain Ian Fraser, all of whom helped organise the event. David Picton, owner of the club, was thanked for opening the course for the competition.
Results: Best Lostwithiel golf club player - John Brumby with 41 points, best visiting player - Jim Tunna of St Austell golf club 41 points, best in club group - Stan Carter of St Austell golf club 38 points, best in second club group - Mike Cock of St Enodoc golf club 30 points, longest drive off the 14th tee - Ivor Yelland of St Austell golf club, nearest the pin on the eighth hole - Bob Taylor of Lostwithiel golf club, visitor nearest the pin on the l7th hole - Mike Babbs of St Enodoc golf club. The 'nearest the pin' achievement was a hole in one, Bob Taylor receiving congratulations from all present and free drinks from club owner David Picton and the club's seniors section.
