In this week’s packed edition of the Cornish Times:
- In the wake of last Thursday evening’s shootings in Keyham, Cornish Times Editor Nigel Walrond has written a personal comment piece asking why and how this tragedy could have happened in a usually peaceful neighbourhood just a few miles from our River Tamar border and highlighting the need for checks on people’s social media activity to be carried out before firearms licences are issued or, in this case, returned by police. We also have a report on a vigil held in Saltash to remember the five victims who died.
- On a happier note, last week schools across South East Cornwall were celebrating the good grades awarded to many GCSE students despite the many difficulties presented to school pupils and staff by the COVID crisis lockdowns and restrictions. We have reports on how the results were greeted in Liskeard, Looe, Saltash, Callington, Torpoint and City College Plymouth. There is also a report from Liskeard School and Community College on two sets of twins who received excellent grades, one set of twins in A-levels and, not to be outdone, the other set of twins in GCSEs.
- Meet the heroic cat named Piran after Cornwall’s patron saint – he alerted a member of the public with his frantic miaows after his elderly owner fell down a steep 70ft embankment and so secured her successful rescue by the emergency services.
- Nature-minded Liskeard residents taking part in a BioBlitz event at St Martin’s Church managed to identify more than 300 species of plants, invertebrates, birds and mammals.
- In the realm of planning, the building of two new houses in a moorland village has been approved despite concerns from local residents, whereas on the outskirts of Callington planners have turned down a housing scheme because of its likely impact on its rural setting.
- Duloe, Linkinhorne, St Ive and Coad’s Green groups all feature in this week’s packed Community News page.
- There are 16 Sport pages in this week’s Cornish Times, with men and women’s football, cricket, golf, sailing, bowls and athletics all being given great coverage.
- There are three pages in this week’s Back British Farmers section, plus a two-page preview of Launceston Horse Trials with added help and guidance features for equine owners.
- There are also Money Matters, Antiques and Auctions, Homes and Gardens, Care, Health and Well-being, Property, Motoring and Recruitment pages packed with information and ideas.
- In addition, we have our usual Puzzles page, TV Choice column and Ray Roberts’ wonderful Nature Watch photographs and observations on local wildlife and botany.
