An amazing exhibition of textiles and embroidery, normally only seen in cathedrals due to its size, is on display in St Martin’s Church Liskeard for the next month.

This is its first visit to Cornwall.

The artist, Jacqui Parkinson, who designed the glass screen and south door in the church, has produced three huge stitched silk panels depicting the theme of the Tree of Life. It runs from the Garden of Eden through Christ’s crucifixion to the New Heaven and Earth in the Book of Revelation at the end of the Bible. More of her work can be viewed on her website at https://www.jacqui-textile.com

Christ crucified, but risen from the dead, is also the subject of the other exhibit, Open Heaven. His figure, from a mould of a real live person, is mounted on a ladder going up to heaven. In the old story of Jacob’s Ladder communication by God and Mankind was represented by angels using a ladder, but now without any such intermediary is by Christ, who leads us to heaven himself.

St Martin’s Church is open during the week from 9am to 12pm midday on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Special group visits can be arranged through the Church Office by calling 01579 347411.
