SUPERMARKET giant Tesco confirmed yesterday that it is interested in opening a store in Callington. Rumours have circulated for some time that the supermarket chain would be creating a new store in the area. A number of sites have been suggested with both Callington and the area at Looe's Millpool car park coming up as possible locations. Confirmed The Cornish Times contacted the company this week, and a spokeswoman confirmed that Tesco has been looking at creating the store. She said: 'We are interested in developing a store in Callington, but it is very early days.' The nearest Tesco store at the moment is at Launceston. In the meantime Sainsburys has chosen two firms based in South East Cornwall to take part in a national initiative which allows small cheese makers to sell products through their supermarkets. Sainsburys has included the Minions based Cornish Cheese Company and Lynher Dairies of Upton Cross in the new deal, as well as around 20 other firms around the nation. Initiative Philip Stansfield of The Cornish Cheese Company, which is based in a converted farmhouse on the edge of Bodmin Moor, said: 'We are delighted to join this initiative which will see our selection of Cornish cheeses reach cheese lovers across the country. 'It is fantastic that Sainsburys is developing a system to promote local British producers.' Lynher Dairies, which also produces cheese from another base near Truro, has been making the famous stinging nettle coated Cornish Yarg for 21 years. Quality control The cheese makers themselves will assume responsibility in areas such as quality control, marketing, and in-store availability, as well as assisting in new product development. Meanwhile Lynher Dairies and its sister company have enjoyed tremendous success this season winning the Perpetual Cup at the Frome Cheese Show and the Gold Medal at the Taste of the West Food and Drink Awards, amongst many awards. Emma Johnson, marketing manager, said: 'It's great to see our cheeses receive the recognition they deserve and its a testament to the skill and dedication of our team of cheese makers!'
