A young sailor from South East Cornwall is helping with the rescue effort in Libya after the warship he was returning home on was turned back to help evacuate people from the troubled country.

Ben Surman, 19, who is serving on HMS Cumberland, was on his way home from a six-month deployment in the Gulf when orders were given to divert to Libya.

The warship had been due to be decommissioned this month on its return to the UK.
