A group of friends who plan to cycle from Bristol to Land’s End will be raising cash for cardiac screening.

Tom Demaine was just 22 years old when he died suddenly from an underlying heart condition.

His parents Ann and Andy have campaigned to introduce free heart screening for everyone aged 14-35. Thanks to their efforts, screening is set to be carried out at Bodmin College in September, and more dates are planned for other locations in Cornwall.

Now, friends of Tom are joining with staff at Bodmin College and local supporters in a fundraising cycle ride, setting off from Bristol in June 28.

The team on the road includes Dr Martin Dixon and David Saunter, members of staff at Bodmin College and friends and governors from Tom’s primary school in Landrake: Helen Ralph, Mike Lemin, Ian Shirley, David Landers, Ruth Hughes, Ian Ross, Dr Petra Williams, Mark Williams, Jamie Curtis and Mike Ralph.

Children taking part in the School Games at Bodmin College and clients at Jumping’ Jack’s Gym in Saltash will be making their own static cycle ride of 240 miles over that weekend.

The group will be making a pit stop in Saltash Co-op today (Friday June 14) to meet the public and raise awareness.
