The 'green shoots of improvement' at Trenode School near Looe show it is doing all the right things to boost the attainment and progress of its pupils, a positive report by Ofsted Inspectors has revealed. The report praises the 'green shoots' of improvement, and concludes that the good teamwork, combined with headteacher Gerry Sweet's clear vision and the good quality action plans, means that the school is well placed to improve rapidly in the future. Inspectors highlight the good leadership and management, the quality of teaching, the excellent behaviour of pupils, the excellent relationships between pupils and staff, and the strong links with parents and the local community. Mr Sweet said that, while few people enjoy being inspected, the experience for him and his colleagues at Trenode was 'fairly positive' in the end. He said: 'We are pleased that our many strengths have been highlighted and reassured that areas in need of development had already been identified by the school. 'The staff and children continually work hard and fully deserve all the praise and plaudits they get. 'Similarly, the continual support from our parents make us a most fortunate school indeed and one we feel privileged to work in.' Praise is given to the curriculum, the excellent range of extra curricular activities, and the quality of teaching, particularly in the foundation stage which, inspectors say, ensures children get off to a good start. The report says older pupils 'are impressed by their teachers' inventiveness in making learning as fun as possible.' The report also commends the care, guidance and support provided for pupils which is summed up by one parent, who said: 'We never have a moment's worry while our children are at school... they are such a caring staff.' Inspectors say that staff know individual pupils very well and ensure that pupils with particular learning needs progress well. Working The inspectors also praise the organisation and administration of the school, saying the headteacher, working closely with the governors, has successfully assembled a strong staff team and has created a climate in which all staff members work enthusiastically together to move the school forward. Pupils are described as very well behaved and displaying excellent attitudes towards learning. 'In classroom activities and around the school, pupils' behaviour is exemplary. Those spoken to showed excellent enjoyment in all activities. 'The excellent relationships they have with each other and with staff ensure that all individuals feel encouraged and develop a confident attitude towards learning.' Inspectors identified just two areas of action for governors and staff to raise standards further: Improve investigative work in science and maths and pupils' skills in writing, and use assessment information with greater precision. Chair of governors Maggie Willmott said: 'We are pleased with the Ofsted report. 'Trenode is a happy and caring school with skilled dedicated staff and excellent support from parents and friends. 'The inspectors recognise this and fully support the various strategies that are in place to improve standards even further.'
