Plucky Mariesa determined to succeed

Plucky little Mariesa Newman, who has suffered from insulin Dependant Diabetes since the age of four, is determined to succeed despite her illness.

She recently had a really great day at Exeter, swimming with some of her friends from Caradon Swimming Club, competing against all comers in the Exeter Club's Open Meet.

Mariesa not only won the trophy for the fastest 10 year old 25 metre Butterfly but achieved a new Championship Best Time, beating the old record which had stood since 1992 by Gemma Burr from Street Club.

The old record was 16.81 seconds which was then, thanks to Mariesa, reduced to 16.59 seconds by her performance in her heat - a truly remarkable achievement and proving her determination not to let her diabetes beat her.

But she then went on to surpass even her own new record, as in the final she reduced it still flirther to only 16.47 seconds - setting a new standard which will take some beating by future 10-year-old girls.

Mariesa swims regularly with Caradon Swimming Club, at Lux Park and at Saltash Leisure centres, under guidance from Coach Simon Ashton, who said "I am extremely proud of Mariesa's achievement, which is a well deserved reflection of her determination and the regular effort that she puts into her training - Well done!"

Also competing well for Caradon was fellow club member Michael Harvey who achieved three new personal best times in 50 metres 10 year boys backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle events.

Proud parents Alan and Annette Harvey said "It all made the 6.30 a.m. start from Liskeard and the 250 miles we travelled over the two days of the competition well worthwhile."
